A Year in Twelve Treatments: What Your Body Actually Needs Each Month

Most people book a massage the way they book a dentist appointment — when something's already gone wrong. But if you pay attention to the rhythm of the year, you'll notice your body takes a very particular kind of beating in each season. The January hunch is not the July hunch. The school-run shoulder is not the festival neck.
So we've mapped the UK year, month by month, against what we actually see walk through the door. Consider this your seasonal maintenance schedule.
January — The Defrost
The damage: three weeks of sofa slouching, heavy duvets, and heating that leaves muscles tight and dehydrated.
Treatment focus: a full-body Swedish or aromatherapy session to get circulation moving again. Think of it as oiling the hinges after a cold store.
February — The Grey Slump
Short days, long commutes in the dark, shoulders permanently shrugged against the wind. February is when winter tension really sets into the upper back.
Treatment focus: upper back and neck work, ideally with deeper pressure. A hot stone element helps too — warmth is what your nervous system is crying out for.
March — The Spring Shake-Off
Gardens get attacked. People who haven't run since October decide now is the time. The first proper DIY weekend of the year lands, and so do the strained forearms.
Treatment focus: deep tissue on the arms, shoulders and lower back. Tell your therapist about the hedge-trimming — they'll know exactly where to go.
April — The Allergy Hunch
Hay fever season begins, and with it comes a surprising culprit: congestion that makes you tilt your head forward and breathe shallowly, loading the neck and jaw.
Treatment focus: neck, jaw and scalp work. Facial massage and sinus-focused techniques can be a genuine revelation here.
May — The Half-Marathon Spike
Race season. Every park in the country fills up with people training for autumn events, and the untrained amongst us take up tennis or five-a-side again.
Treatment focus: sports massage — legs for the runners, shoulders and forearms for the racket crowd. Recovery work now prevents the June injury.
June — The Wedding and Festival Build-Up
Long days, late nights, standing in heeled shoes at someone's big day, or sleeping on a lilo. June bodies are tired but running on sunshine and not complaining yet.
Treatment focus: a restorative full-body session — not too deep, just genuinely replenishing. Think of it as charging the battery before summer properly arrives.
July — The Festival Neck
Airbeds, tents, hours craning at stages, and lugging cool boxes across fields. Plus office air conditioning doing its best to freeze your shoulders solid.
Treatment focus: neck and shoulder deep tissue, with attention to the lower back if camping was involved. Book it the week after the festival, not a month later.
August — The Holiday Paradox
You'd think August would be a quiet month. Instead we see people wrecked by long-haul flights, unfamiliar beds, overambitious paddleboarding lessons and carrying children who suddenly weigh a tonne.
Treatment focus: travel recovery — a thorough full-body session with leg work to shift post-flight heaviness.
September — The School-Run Strain
New routines, heavy bags, heavier diaries. Parents carry the mental load physically — one hip for the toddler, one shoulder for the laptop bag.
Treatment focus: lower back, hips and shoulders. This is the month to re-establish a regular booking before autumn properly bites.
October — The Desk Descent
The clocks change, evenings collapse inwards, and everyone migrates back to the indoors and the desk chair. Posture quietly deteriorates as outdoor time vanishes.
Treatment focus: postural work — deeper massage targeting the chest-opening, shoulder-releasing patterns that counteract desk life.
November — The Pre-Christmas Bank
Party season looms, stress hormones climb, and sleep quality quietly drops. Tension creeps into the jaw and the shoulders start living near the ears.
Treatment focus: relaxation massage with targeted neck and jaw work. This is also the month to buy gift vouchers — just saying.
December — The Survival Session
Cooking for twelve, standing at parties in unsuitable shoes, sleeping in the spare room on a folding bed. December is endurance.
Treatment focus: whatever hurts. Honestly — a therapist-led session in the last fortnight of December is the difference between enjoying Christmas and merely enduring it.
The Pattern Behind the Calendar
Notice something? Your body's needs shift constantly, and a single annual massage can't possibly cover it. The clients who feel consistently good aren't the ones who book when something breaks — they're the ones who book ahead of the season that's coming.
Whatever month you're reading this in, there's a version of you six weeks from now who'll be glad you booked today.
